Nabokov House, St. Petersburg, Russia

Originally built in the 18th century, remodeled in 1901 by Michail Geisler in the Art Nouveau style.

Vladimir Nabokov was born in this house in 1899. His family lived there until the October Revolution of 1917. When the Nabokov family fled St. Petersburg, they took almost no possessions with them, intending to be away for only a few months. They were never to return. Nabokov loved the house and the childhood it symbolized. Even after achieving fame in the US, Nabokov never purchased a home, referring to this house as “the only house in the world.”
