Bernard Maybeck (American, 1862-1957)

Boke House, Berkeley, California, 1902

Maybeck’s “Swiss Chalet Craftsman” on Panoramic Way in Berkeley features an open flow between the living room and dining room. Maybeck’s economical use of space in this relatively modest 1902 “cottage” influenced the design of bungalows throughout California. The design was so successful that Maybeck built houses almost identical to the Boke plan on Mather St in Oakland and in Aberdeen, Washington.
